Description

#JOTO Vintage Ceramic Creative Vase_DER0113】

“Admire the worthy yet embrace the many; smooth the edges, and fit together like tiles.”

Today I found a vase that feels uncannily aligned with where I am in life—almost like a quiet testament to growth itself. This vintage ceramic vase has an irregular form, reminiscent of broken tiles pieced together (any fans of No Party For Cao Dong here?). It mirrors how life often feels: we keep trying to lift our muddied selves upright, patching and adjusting along the way. In that half-forced, half-willing process, we become who we are now.

And yet I often remember a line recorded in the Book of Rites: “Admire the virtuous and accommodate the many; break the square edges and join like tiles.” Even a generous Confucian scholar must smooth down his corners in order to fit alongside others. Growth may be exactly this: on one hand, reconstructing scattered fragments into a vessel that can hold something meaningful—becoming someone capable and useful; on the other, sanding down our sharp edges so we can align with others who are striving just as earnestly.

This irregular, vintage ceramic vase embodies that quiet philosophy. Its asymmetry isn’t a flaw—it’s a form of integration. It reminds us that becoming whole doesn’t mean remaining unchanged; it means learning how to assemble, adapt, and coexist.
