Do you have a favorite café? For me, the small independent cafés near my school each have their own charm, unique ambiance, and distinctive crowd. Every café plays a different tune, and the patrons inside are immersed in their own activities, reading different books. Today, let me share some of my favorite spots with you.

Near my school, the Wenluoding district hides several cafés that I adore. I particularly love sunlit, cozy cafés with upbeat but unobtrusive music. My best friend, a bold girl with tattoos on both arms, prefers cafés with a strong, edgy vibe. We often bicker over where to study together!

On sunny days, I love visiting Picnic Café and settling into a sunny patio corner, often a snug single-seater sofa. I lose myself there with a novel or essay collection, not sure if it’s the story, the friend working behind the counter, or the café’s overall vibe that captivates me.

When the evening falls, I usually head to Magpie Café or Halfway Café. I find a cozy corner, order a coffee, and dive into heavy theoretical readings. I’ve worked through Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Foucault, and Butler here. The dim lighting complements the challenge of these texts, creating a uniquely contemplative experience.

For creative projects or all-nighters, I follow my best friend to Rebirth Café or Lamb Flea Café across the street. These spots are bustling, with intense music and bold styles that make me, a timid bookworm, feel out of place. Surrounded by hippies with flowing hair and punk girls smoking cigarettes, I retreat to a hidden corner with my laptop, furiously typing away at my assignments.

Every café reflects a different style, serves distinct signature treats, brews uniquely flavored Sicilian coffee, and unveils a different side of me. I feel like I’ve scattered pieces of myself across Wenluoding’s cafés, each holding fragments of my memories and identity. When one of these cherished cafés closes, like the iconic Grass Barn Café, it feels as if a part of me vanishes too.
